Handheld Weapons Long Swords: Long swords are usually held with two hands, and the average weight of the swords from the 10th to the 15th centuries were 1.3 kg. Unlike in the 16th century where they were 0.9 kg. The horse swordsmen swords weighed 1.8 kg on average. Arming Swords: Arming swords are smaller versions of long swords. They were single handed blades, and double edged. Their common use was between ca. 1000 and 1350, and were rare after the 16th century. Mace: A mace is a blunt weapon, that was used to cause brutal wounds. They would have had spikes, nails, or chains attached to it to cause a lot of damage.
Artillery Trebuchet: There are two kinds of trebuchets; the traction trebuchet, and the counterweight trebuchet. The traction trebuchet contained a short piece of wood to extend the arm and provide greater leverage. To work, a number of people pulled on ropes attached to the short arm of a lever that had a sling on the long arm. This trebuchet was smaller and had a shorter range. It was also more portable and had a shorter cycle time than the counterweight trebuchets.
The Counterweight Trebuchet: The counterweighted trebuchet was the newer version of a trebuchet. Its construction consisted of wooden planks, and weights. To fire, the weights are released and the wooden arm swings up and releases the stones, or animals into the air. The counterweight trebuchet was a much heavier, less convenient and portable trebuchet.
Powered Weapons The Crossbow: The crossbow is a weapon that is made for range. It shoots projectiles, also known as bolts. The crossbow is a bow mounted on a piece of stock. To load it, the crank is pulled back, and a bolt is loaded. To fire, the trigger is pulled.
Bows and Longbows:Bows are weapons that are shot by tension, and projectile force. The body uses its force to create energy for the farthest and most accurate shot possible. As the string is released, the arrows used get shot through the air. Each archer would shoot around 10 arrows a minute, as it put strain on the fingers and the muscles. A bow would usually be made of Ash, Hazel or Elm wood. To note, long bows were the newer bow technology. They were larger, stronger, and more reliable. To compare to present time, a normal bow would be a musket and the long bow would be an AK-47.
